The Coalition is one year older - but is it wiser?

So the Coalition is a year old this week. But it doesn‘t feel like much of a birthday party for Whitehall. Yet again, the Civil Service will be adapting to changing dynamics and new rhetoric following the weekend elections.

Over the past 12 months, politicians and civil servants have learned a great deal about working in coalition. Today we’ll be updating our views on how to make Coalition government more effective in our report ‘One Year On’.

As part of our study, we asked Populus to poll the public on how they think the coalition has done in its first year. The findings make interesting reading and will add weight to voices that are calling for a reinvention of the Coalition to reflect party identities and new priorities, and to set out a new policy vision. We are releasing our poll and our study today and you can read them on our website.

Also this month, we’ll be launching our report on the challenges of being an effective minister. We interviewed 28 current and former ministers and their insights and opinions promise to make fascinating reading and may even provide valuable advice to the Coalition.

Finally, on 25 May, the Secretary of State for International Development Andrew Mitchell MP will address the Institute on the Government's approach to international aid and development. Be sure to book your place here.
